Cromwell Golf Club – Press Release Jan 12 th 2007
On Thursday 16 th November, Cromwell Golf Club held it’s AGM and the new Captains were sworn in. Steve Whitney handed over the Men’s captaincy to Dave Saunders; Liz Ede handed over the Ladies captaincy to Jayne Olver, and Bernie Plummer handed over the Senior Captaincy to Mike Gardner. Dave Saunders announced that the Charity for this year would be split between Motor Neurone Disease and the Stroke Society. All these nominations were well received and the Cromwell members would like to wish them every success in the coming year. The biggest charity day event of the year is held on FA Cup Final Day – 19 May 2007 – so watch this space for more detail on how you can take part and contribute to 2 good causes !
On Saturday 17 th November, past Captain Marjorie Nicholas organised a ladies clothes sale with all money raised going to the Motor Neurone charity. Everyone donated new or nearly new clothes, shoes, bags and accessories and all the ladies had a wonderful afternoon shopping and chatting over coffee and cakes! Marjorie raised in excess of £300 on the day.
On Sunday 18 th November, Cromwell held the annual Princess Diana Trophy event with all monies raised going to the Princess Diana memorial trust. The competition is played in pairs with both stableford scores counting towards the winning total. Overall winners were Paul Hutchinson and Larry Edwards with a combined score of 78. Mick Gregory and Gary Carter were runners up with 77 points. Nearest the pin winners on the 4 th and 8 th were Mike Gardner and Gary Carter, whilst longest drive winners were Pam Wilkes and Paul Hutchinson. The Best Lady was Liz Ede with 31 points, and the Best Man was Gary Carter with 43 points.
With the retirement of the current President, John Dean after 3 years, a ballot was held by all members to vote in a new President. We are pleased to announce that DOUG COOPER was sworn in as the new President of Cromwell Golf Club.
One of the most fun events of the year is Christmas Chaos when everyone is invited to play 18 holes of golf in Fancy Dress !! Some great entries this year – particularly Mick Healey dressed as ‘the only gay in the village’ – a sight to behold, and Tony Osborne as “Ozzy O” ! However, the winners of the fancy dress this year went to the “Poppadom Tribe” – comprising of Big Chief S*itting Bull [Phil Kingham]; Chief Vindaloo [Doug Cooper]; Tikka Masala [Debbie Jones] and Onion Bhaji [Angie Kingham]. Thanks to Steve Whitney for organising yet another fun event. The winners on the day were father and son team, Vernon and Cain Giblett.

After the Christmas festivities, we held our New Years Day 9-hole Texas Scramble, results as follows :

Finally, to bring the social calendar up to date, on Friday 5 January, Cromwell members visited Peterborough Dogs to try their hand at greyhound racing. The event was in aid of the “Captain’s Last Supper” and a race was dedicated to Steve Whitney and Liz Ede [the outgoing captains pictured here on the right].
